 Depression
Era Elegant Glass was also made in the Depression
era (1929 to 1939), but was sold in department and jewelry stores.
These pieces were more expensive and had much more hand finishing than the more inexpensive
Depression Glass, which was almost all
machine made.
The early 1900s to the early 1950s were the heyday for Elegant Glass - it was finer glass that was sold in jewelry and department stores. It was most popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Glass companies began to go under in the 1950s as the average American lifestyles and tastes changed. Fostoria and Imperial Glass Companies stayed open through the early 1980s.
Elegant glass is very collectible and like
Depression Glass comes in a variety of beautiful colors.
Most patterns had a very large variety of pieces, so it is quite possible
to acquire a large collection.
The pieces pictured here are from my collection of Imperial Cape Cod
items. I collect it in all the different colors. My favorite is
the ruby red - I love using it with my Christmas dishes!
