Fire King Turquoise
These dishes were meant for daily use and were often marked as oven proof or heat resistant. While they could not be used on the stovetop, for everyday oven applications - they were perfect, and reasonably priced. Anchor Hocking tied some of its product line to various companies like Quaker Oats in order to make novelty items. Even those items were, for the most part, intended for daily use. This means that if you're looking for Fire King be prepared for a few imperfections.
With good quality Fire King pieces pricing varies depending on market demand. A D style handle mug from about 1957, for example, will run about $50 in excellent condition. By comparison a teardrop "easy pour" mixing bowl set dating to the same period will set you back about $400 (because its rare to find a complete set in really good condition). Here are a few other average prices:
Note that if you're looking for something highly collectible look for the Fire King Turquoise 10 inch dinner plates bearing the mark "oven fire king ware - made in USA". The most desirable. Marking: Oven Fire King Ware Made in U.S.A. Excellent condition.
One of the easier items to find in Turquoise are mugs. Anchor Hocking made everything from cups that looked like a miniature teacup or goblet to hearty styled coffee mugs. Many of these mugs will feature the manufacturer mark "Fire-King" (in fact MOST of them do). The general cut off date for fire king turquoise mugs is 1979. What to Avoid: In buying Fire King turquoise you obviously want dishes in the best possible condition that fit your budget. Ones that are scratched badly aren't the best choice as they sometimes break easily. Always try to get pieces that have the manufacturer's marks intact. Care and Feeding: Many people like to use their Fire King, and that's exactly what this line was intended for - the family table. However, never use a dishwasher to clean your pieces. Over time this will ruin their value. Some experts feel that you can use fire king pieces in the microwave but do so with the understanding that microwave technology had not been utilized in the home when this ovenware was created. You may end up causing the piece to chip or crack unintentionally. Play it safe and leave these for oven use.
