Hazel Atlas Glass Company
Hazel Atlas Glass Company was founded in 1902 in Wheeling, West Virginia when four glass companies merged (Hazel Glass and Metals Company, Atlas Glass Company, Wheeling Metal Plant and Republic Glass Company). The corporate headquarters were loacted in Wheeling, but no glass was ever produced there. The company did produce jar lids and commercial container closures, including those for Jiff Peanut Butter, Maxwell House Coffee, Vick's Salve, French's Mustard and Avon Bottles, in Wheeling.
The company manufactured its machine-made pressed glass throughout the U.S, including other parts of West Virginia plus the states of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, and California. In its prime the company also maintained sales offices in New York, Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia, Rochester, Cleveland, and San Francisco, and by the 1930s had grown to become the largest glass manufacturer in the world. In addition to the Depression Glass that is still collected today, Hazel Atlas was the main manufacturer of commercial glass jars for just about anything you can think of, including Syrup jars, Baby food jars, Mayonnaise jars, Vick's Vaporub jars, Beer bottles, Wine and liquor bottles, Medicine bottles, Peanut butter jars, Snuff bottles, Ink bottles, Jelly and jam tumblers, Chipped beef jars, Crisco jars, Mineral water bottles, Cold cream jars, Medicine jars, Kerosene oil jugs, Shoe polish bottles, Vaseline jars, Soft drink bottles and Pickle jars.
The company began making colored glass in 1929. They also made reamers (orange juice squeezers) and other kitchen glassware, all of which are very popular vintage collectibles today. The company was sold to and taken over by Continental Can in 1956.
