Question about Square Glass Dish

Square Glass Dish

Square Glass Dish

I have collected several clear glass dishes that make lovely dessert or salad dishes. There is not a name on them. They are about 6 1/2 " x 6 1/2 " square with pointed edges and ruffled sides.

I would love to know what era they are from. I'm wondering if perhaps they were from the time when dishes were inside soap boxes.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance to find out more information about them.

Thank you!

Debbie Z of California

Hi Debbie -
I am not familiar with this pattern but I will put this up and hopefully someone will come along who knows that it is! I believe the square shapes were popular in the 70s & 80s and I am not familiar with any older patterns with square bowls.

Square Dishes

I also have two of these and did not know whether they were ashtrays or candy dishes and I saw them on ebay recently listed as ice cream dishes!! I'm sorry I don't know the maker or pattern, either. The ebay seller had little description of them also. Regards, Maria

Maria,

Thank you for your comments about the square dishes I have. The information you provided is more than I had. I'll keep checking various places to see if I can find anything else about them.

Glass Sqaure Dish
by: Barb

Debbie, my mother had a set of four dishes very similar to this in the 50s. They had a bit of color in the very bottom part......blue, lavender, green, and a dark pink...she used them as ashtrays. I only have one left.

Butter Plates
by: Donna, Melb Australia

Hi Debbie, Glad you found out the pattern name, it is so frustrating. In Australia during the 1930's and 40's small square dishes like this were butter plates. The square slabs of butter sold in wax paper were placed on them. I have a number of Crown Crystal ones made here and they are great for serving all sorts of treats.
